Sci-Fi writer wins at the Edge
The independent publisher Elastic Press may have closed down, but its works just keep going and in fact, a science fiction collection has defied the critics and the current financial situation to beat off competition from heavy hitters like Faber, Vintage, Cape and Hamish Hamilton to win an influential contest.
Elastic Press author Chris Becket has won the 2009 Edge Hill Short Story Prize for his collection of short stories, The Turing Test. He collected the prize of £5,000 and an original painting by the artist Pete Clarke at a ceremony held at the Bluecoat Centre in Liverpool by Edge Hill University.
As if that was not enough the author also picked up the Readers Prize, which is worth £1,000.
Second prize went to the Vintage author, Anne Enright for her collection Yesterday’s Weather, this prize is worth £1,000.
